The Idols Top 6 finalists produced major song-and-dance showstoppers with some timeless hits.

“Showstopper” was the musical theme for Sunday’s Idols Top 6 Spectacular and what a showstopper it was!

With the help of Season 6 runner-up Lloyd Cele the Top 6 have been working hard all week to produce a major song-and-dance showstopper with some timeless hits. Since Sunday’s show was pre-recorded on Friday at the Home Of Idols, the Mosaïek Teatro, the Top 6 could be there in person to watch the broadcast with their fans in Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton on Sunday night!

The Top 6 kicked off the show with a group performance of 30 Seconds To Mars’ Closer To The Edge and then Lloyd showed how it should be done when he performed his latest hit, Feel The Love, from his new album No Limits.

And then the competition was on, with seventeen-year-old Shekhinah “Sheki” Donnell from Durban bringing the “Dougie” that she promised Idols judge Unathi Msengana last week with her big production of the Britney Spears hit, Till The World Ends. “You looked like you were having a great time,” Gareth Cliff remarked. “You handled all of it really professionally – so we had fun too.” Unathi acknowledged how hard it is for a performer to sing and dance at the same time. “You kept your breathing regular, you sang, and you can let it all out now,” she said. “And that is exactly what today is about,” she complimented Sheki. “So big up yourself and thanks for the Dougie!” And Randall Abrahams considered that Sheki’s youth counted in her favour tonight, “because you are just having such a great time – so fun, so young… all that sort of energy…” he said admiringly.

Staying with the girls, P.E. beauty Melissa Allison ,23, was up next with her version of Rihanna’s Where Have You Been. “Melissa, that was sexy as hell. It was really good,” Gareth raved. “I really thought that you would drop the ball vocally, but you didn’t. Well done.” “Thank you for reminding the country that the most beautiful, sensual women hail from the Eastern Cape,” Unathi joked. “I wish Rihanna had seen this before she actually recorded the video,” she flattered Melissa. And Randall was satisfied that Melissa had been consistent over the past couple of weeks and that her song choices have been good. “I think this week’s really going to work for you,” he predicted.

Monde Msutwana ,30, from Pretoria was the first of the guys to strut his stuff, performing Scream, by Usher. Gareth noted that all the performances so far had been looking really good, but he had qualms over Monde’s turn. “It was good dude, it was not horrible, but I just felt that you were not completely in control,” he worried. Unathi thought it might have been due to the song choice. “I think the choruses were very hyper and that’s where you came alive,” she noted. Randall thought Monde was “fantastic”. “I think this is going to be a really difficult week,” he noted. “I have no idea what is going to happen on Tuesday, because so far the performances have been great.”

The Pride of Port Nolloth, 23-year-old Simphiwe Gwegwe, chose Chris Brown’s Turn Up the Music to hopefully propel him out of the Bottom 3, where he ended up last week. Gareth was impressed with his energy but, as with Monde’s performance, he worried that Simphiwe was not in control throughout. “Whereas with Shekhinah and Melissa I felt they were,” he worried. “I may be wrong – let the votes decide…” But Unathi pointed out that even Chris Brown himself recently had to mime that song because he could not sustain an entire live performance. “You completed the entire song, you sang it live, you are still alive,” she praised. “The person who owns the song could not do that, so big up yourself.” Randall thought this song choice really worked for Simphiwe. “I would say that this style of music is possibly best suited to what you do,” he advised.

And then it was the turn of the popular “PK” from Durban, Khaya Mthethwa, with his version of the Keri Hilson/Kanye West/Ne-Yo hit, Knock You Down. Gareth remembered that Khaya had expressed some insecurity about his dancing, “but you have nothing to worry about when it comes to dancing,” he reassured him. “That was fantastic. Well done.” Unathi said that she was speechless. “Tonight you KILLED it!” she praised. Randall agreed with Khaya that he is not the best dancer, “but what is important is that you relied on your singing in order to get you through and it worked,” he reassured him. “So it’s important to know what your strengths are and at this stage of the competition, focus on your strengths.”

It fell to Tshidi Tenyane, 29, from Thokoza to close the show in grand style and did she ever, with a showstopper version of one of Beyoncé’s greatest hit ever, Crazy In Love. “Oh Tshidi, I just love you,” Gareth sighed. “It was the right mix of theatrics and performance and a little bit of dancing at just the right times, but you didn’t let the song take control. It was YOU. And I couldn’t take my eyes off of you.” Unathi was impressed that Tshidi managed to personalise one of Beyoncé’s most iconic hits. “You did not try to be someone else and you did not try to mimic her, which did you justice,” she praised. Randall remarked that, like Khaya, Tshidi knows that she is not a great dancer, “but from a vocal point of view, in terms of what you have to do in this competition… fantastic…” he praised. “Even though you’re not a dancer, your performance was still great.”

The voting lines for the Top 6 Spectacular opened at the start of Sunday’s show and will close at 22:00 on Monday, 3 September. The results of the vote will be announced in the live Top 6 Results Show at the Mosaïek Teatro on Tuesday, 4 September, at 19:30, with a special guest performance from Lira!
